
The US Air Force’s X-62A VISTA test aircraft successfully used an AI “brain” linked to Lockheed Martin’s Legion Pod infrared search-and-track (IRST) sensor to autonomously detect, track, and intercept a live T-38 acting as an enemy aircraft. Across eight flights, the X-62 completed 27 AI-controlled intercepts, demonstrating a closed-loop system in which real-time sensor data guided the AI from target detection to tactical maneuvering.

The tests were part of the Air Force Test Pilot School’s HAVE HEAT and HAVE HOLIDAYS programs, which also integrated third-party autonomous software, enhanced AI safety systems, and new mission technologies in preparation for future upgrades including RTX’s PhantomStrike radar and expanded computing capabilities.
The milestone, achieved by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, the US Air Force Test Pilot School, and industry partners, marks a significant step toward AI-augmented air combat, autonomous mission systems, and future human-machine teaming designed to enhance pilot effectiveness and survivability.
