It’s graduation season and not just from school. Many of you are retiring from work and graduating into retirement. Now what? Good question.
When you spend a lifetime getting up and going to school, or getting up and going to work, it’s jarring when you finally get up and have nowhere to go. Just ask your spouse. The good news is that with a little prior planning, you can experience the retirement you deserve.
When Your Survival Guy advises investors about preparing their finances for retirement, rule number one is that it’s best to make this decision as a couple. How will your retirement life be experienced together? Because working for a living, and then spending what you saved is by itself a monumental change, but how will you fill the days to keep you both fulfilled?
This is serious business, especially when much of what you know in your adult life is work. It’s why I like the idea of saving ‘til it hurts and working for as long as you can and maybe slowing down over time. I’m not saying work for as long as Warren Buffett, but the man looks happy, does he not?
Yes, play golf, join book clubs, and work at living your best life. You might think I have a lot of nerve giving you recommendations about something I have yet to experience, but I’ve talked to plenty of retirees and have guided their money through every stage of their retirement lives.
As one client told me long ago, “Survival Guy,” there’s the go, go, the slow go, and the no go years. Don’t let the first two slip away.”
