Retirement #4: How Do You Feel? How Will You Feel?

May 19, 2025 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

By Tanja Wilbertz @ Adobe Stock

When it comes to retirement, two questions worth thinking about have nothing to do with money, but more to do with emotions. We spend so much time talking about money: “Do you have enough money to retire on comfortably?” But two questions worth pondering are, how do you feel about retirement, and how will you feel?

Life is funny. When we’re in school, it’s all about studying, but what about the question, “What are you going to do with your life?” There isn’t a lot of talk about careers. Incidentally, one of the best career preps, America’s vocational schools that were left for dead, are finally making a comeback. When we relate this to retirement, it’s about money, not a happy retirement life. People talk about money, but not how it can bring meaning or fulfilment to retirement.

In my conversations with you, you tell me how busy you are, which is one of the keys to a happy retirement and life. We hear so much about keeping relationships with friends and family, which are, of course, important, but if you can also be comfortable doing what you love by yourself without anyone else motivating you, I think you’ve found gold.

He grew-up worshiping Neil Peart (RIP) of the band Rush, and loves the song Tom Sawyer—the name of his family’s boat, a Grady-White Canyon 306. He grew up in Mattapoisett, MA, an idyllic small town on the water near Cape Cod. He spends time in Newport, RI and Bartlett, NH—both as far away from Wall Street as one could mentally get. The Newport office is on a quiet, tree lined street not far from the harbor and the log cabin in Bartlett, NH, the “Live Free or Die” state, sits on the edge of the White Mountain National Forest. He enjoys spending time in Key West (RIP JB) and Paris.
