The AIM-9X Sidewinder is the U.S. Navy’s most advanced short-range, infrared-guided missile, designed to engage modern airborne threats with high accuracy. It features a passive infrared seeker, high maneuverability, resistance to infrared countermeasures, and high off-boresight targeting, allowing pilots to engage targets day or night. Newer Block II and Block II+ variants include a datalink for post-launch target updates, limited beyond-visual-range and surface-attack capabilities, and can also be integrated into ground-based air defense systems such as the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS).

The AIM-9X is the latest version of the long-serving Sidewinder missile family and is used by the US Navy, US Air Force, and more than 35 allied and partner nations. In June 2026, Raytheon was awarded a $1.1 billion US Navy contract to produce AIM-9X Block II missiles, along with associated hardware and software, for US forces and Foreign Military Sales customers.

To meet growing global demand, the company is increasing production capacity to 2,500 missiles per year, helping ensure a steady supply of this combat-proven missile for US and allied military operations.
