Ukraine says its forces captured a Russian position using only drones and unmanned ground vehicles, marking what Volodymyr Zelensky described as a first in modern warfare, reports Rory McKeown of the Metro. FPV (First Person View) drones had already reshaped the battlefield, acting as a constant psychological threat with their inescapable presence and high-pitched buzz, driving anxiety, limiting ease of movement and navigation, and forcing troops to hide or relocate.
Working in tandem, these aerial drones and robotic ground systems are now pushing Russian forces back, with the operation carried out without infantry and no Ukrainian casualties—helping save Ukrainian troops’ lives. Ground systems from DevDroid LLC have also demonstrated the ability to hold positions for extended periods, including months in some frontline deployments in eastern Ukraine. The shift is strategically significant given that Russian forces remain numerically larger, but the growing use of robotics is helping to even out battlefield imbalances.
Ukraine’s expanding unmanned arsenal includes systems such as the DevDroids Droid TW 12.7, a tracked UGV armed with a 12.7 mm M2 Browning machine gun for reconnaissance and strike missions, featuring AI-assisted targeting and a remote control range of up to 15 miles. The Droid NW 40 is designed for 40mm automatic grenade launchers with an engagement range of about 1.5 km, while the Combat Module Wolly 7.62 supports PKT 7.62mm machine guns for targets up to 1,000 meters. Supporting these platforms are DD-M2-S1 electric triggers, enabling remote firing of heavy weapons such as .50 cal machine guns and grenade launchers. Future developments reportedly include heavier robotic platforms equipped with 30mm cannons intended to engage armored vehicles.
