
NATO plans to spend at least $1 billion per month starting in 2026 to buy US-made weapons and ammunition for Ukraine, including offensive systems, Secretary General Mark Rutte announced. The funding will flow through the new Purl initiative, created to meet US demands that European allies take on a greater share of Ukraine support, reports Eliana Nunes of The Mirror. European officials said the move is vital as Russia shows no signs of de-escalation. Meanwhile, the EU has also agreed to ban all Russian gas imports by autumn 2027, and diplomatic efforts continue after a meeting between Trump’s envoy and Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Nunes writes:
NATO members plan to spend at least one billion US dollars a month on American weapons for Ukraine, the alliance’s chief has said.
Secretary General Mark Rutte said the bloc would start funding American weapons and ammunition for Ukraine – including offensive systems – starting in 2026. The aim is to get crucial equipment to Ukraine, such as interceptor missiles for air defence systems, Rutte told foreign ministers from European NATO countries in Brussels today. The arms are expected to be supplied through the so-called Purl initiative, launched this year to meet the demands of US President Donald Trump, who has said the US has already contributed far too much in supporting Ukraine and wants other allies to fund further US military aid.
