Biden Empowers the Unelected
Has anyone ever sympathized with bureaucrats for having too little power and no job security? President Joe Biden, is essentially saying it right now, reconsiders James Freeman, as the president implements a new policy intended to further insulate government employees from the decisions of free people making democratic choices.
For anyone who wants a democratic government responsive to the will of the people, the problems with the Biden policy are manifest.
Thwarting the Duly Elected
President Joe Biden, the man who constantly claims he is defending democracy, has implemented an antidemocracy policy. Mr. Freeman accuses the president of attempting to empower people who were never elected to thwart Mr. Biden’s duly elected successors, (whomever that might be).
From CNN’s Betsy Klein and Tami Luhby :
The Biden administration has finalized a new rule bolstering protections for career federal workers, marking a move to preemptively halt or significantly slow any efforts by former President Donald Trump, should he win in November, to reduce or alter the federal workforce.
Trump’s executive order created a new classification of federal employees titled “Schedule F” for employees serving in “confidential, policy-determining, policy-making, or policy-advocating positions” that typically do not change during a presidential transition.
Derailment
Joe Biden’s rule from the Office of Personnel Management is intended to impede Mr. Trump if he wins the presidency again and revive an executive order he issued in October of 2020. The Trump order created the option of converting thousands of senior bureaucrats into at-will employees.
Protecting the Most Powerful Career Bureaucrats
President Joe Biden might not agree that a deep state exists, but “his policy seems like a great way to create one,” argues Mr. Freedman.
It explicitly reduces the ability of the elected president to manage the executive branch, diluting the democratic power of the people.
For anyone who wants a democratic government responsive to the will of the people, the problems with the Biden policy are manifest.
It also looks like a potential disaster for the morale of Democrats. How are Mr. Biden’s partisans supposed to be enthusiastic about his re-election prospects if he’s spending his time devising ways to impede the next Trump administration?
