BAE Systems is advancing its Nyan jet-powered, uncrewed aerial system, designed to provide precision-strike capabilities in contested environments and deliver affordable combat mass alongside traditional military aircraft. Developed and built by its entity Callen-Lenz, the 2.9-meter-wingspan drone features a modular design and is intended for integration across land and maritime operations.
In its latest milestone, the Royal Navy successfully launched four Nyan One-Way Effector (OWE) drones from HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier during Exercise Neptune Reach B in the North Atlantic on November 6, 2026. All four drones successfully reached their designated strike points, demonstrating the system’s ability to operate from a major naval platform. This follows earlier maritime testing aboard the experimental vessel XV Patrick Blackett and land-based trials in Estonia during Exercise Spring Storm.
The trials highlight BAE Systems’ growing investment in autonomous defense technologies and the Royal Navy’s development of a hybrid fleet combining crewed and uncrewed platforms. The successful carrier launches provide important operational data for future maritime strike capabilities and support broader efforts to expand the use of scalable, lower-cost uncrewed systems in modern military operations.
