The US military conducted its first-ever kinetic drone swarm demonstration on American soil earlier this month at Camp Blanding, Florida, marking a major milestone in unmanned warfare experimentation, according to Drew F. Lawrence of Defensescoop. During the Jan. 8 exercise, troops launched four first-person view drones—some carrying live explosive payloads—that coordinated through a shared communication network to strike simulated targets in near-simultaneous attacks.

Part of the Pentagon’s Swarm Forge initiative, the demonstration showcased the ability of a single operator to command multiple armed drones working collaboratively, highlighting growing efforts to integrate AI-enabled and autonomous systems into future combat operations and to scale swarm tactics for real-world military use. Lawrence writes:

During a demonstration earlier this month, the U.S. military conducted the first kinetic drone swarm on American soil, officials said, a notable milestone in the Pentagon’s effort to experiment with unmanned systems that communicate across a common operating network to accomplish various tasks.

A small group of troops gathered at Camp Blanding, Florida, on Jan. 8 where they launched four first-person view drones — some of which were packed with plastic explosives — into the air and toward a column of inflatable tanks. One drone acted as a “leader,” guiding the other three toward their targets, which exploded in synchronized pops, according to a video of the demo. […]
