A Look at Blackbeard, the Nation’s First Low-Cost, Mass-Produced Hypersonic Weapon

The Blackbeard is a low-cost, Mach 5+ hypersonic missile developed by Castelion for deployment across multiple military platforms. It is being integrated with the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and Saronic’s Marauder autonomous vessel, with live-fire demonstrations planned for 2027. A ground-launched variant is also being developed for HIMARS, expanding its potential use across air, sea, and land.

The U.S. Navy has awarded Castelion nearly $90 million to advance its Blackbeard hypersonic strike weapon toward Early Operational Capability. The contract funds engineering, logistics, and manufacturing work for 50 early operational weapons, while supporting Blackbeard’s transition into a formal Navy Program of Record. Work is expected to continue through August 2028.

Developed by the California-based defense startup, Blackbeard is a compact, lower-cost, mass-producible hypersonic weapon with speeds above Mach 5 and a stated range of up to 500 nautical miles. Unlike more expensive hypersonic systems, Castelion is prioritizing affordability and high-rate production, reportedly targeting a unit cost below $500,000.

Castelion is also scaling up to accelerate Blackbeard’s production. The company recently announced a $1 billion Series C funding round, consisting of $800 million in equity and $250 million in committed credit, valuing the company at $13 billion. The funding is intended to expand production of Blackbeard and advance Castelion’s broader portfolio of affordable, mass-producible weapons.

The Navy is also pursuing Blackbeard for F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, potentially giving carrier air wings a rapid-response, long-range strike option against sophisticated air-defense networks. By emphasizing production volume over maximum payload, the weapon is intended to give the Navy larger missile inventories and greater strike capacity in contested maritime environments.
