Boeing has received a $324 million US Army contract for six CH-47F Block II Chinook helicopters, bringing the total under contract to 24 aircraft as part of an accelerated fielding strategy.
The Block II upgrade improves lift capacity, range, and sustainment, enhancing operations in austere and contested environments while supporting faster resupply and greater reach. Boeing concepts also highlight Chinooks launching drones from both manned and unmanned configurations, expanding their role as hubs for unmanned systems.
Additionally, the Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS) enables autonomous flight paths, while the Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) functions like a “lane assist,” improving safety, reducing pilot workload, and supporting increasingly autonomous operations for the CH-47F Block II.
The CH-47F Block II features improved capabilities:
- A strengthened drivetrain and airframe that adds 4,000 pounds to the aircraft’s maximum gross weight, thus significantly greater lift capability.
- Innovative fuel-system changes that extend the mission radius for nearly all payloads.
- Improved sustainment and the ability to accommodate affordable future upgrades.
