Finnish President Alexander Stubb reports that Ukraine currently holds a significant military advantage, citing a 1:5 kill ratio in favor of Kyiv, as reported by Elisabeth Gosselin-Malo of Breaking Defense. Speaking at a Brookings Institution panel, Stubb attributed this shift largely to Ukraine’s evolving drone capabilities, noting that 95 percent of recent kills have been achieved via unmanned systems. This high efficiency is bolstered by “interceptor drones” that reportedly destroyed 33,000 Russian drones in a single month, as well as the ability to project power up to 3,000 kilometers. Malo writes:
“I think Ukraine is in a much better place than it has been at any stage in this horrific war — the killing ratio right now is 1:5, one Ukrainian soldier to five Russian soldiers. … The rate at which they’re going now is roughly 150 to 157 dead [Russian] soldiers per square kilometers,” Stubb said during a panel organized by the Brookings Institution on Monday while on an official visit to Washington.
While Stubb warned that a prolonged conflict into next winter remains the most likely scenario, he expressed optimism regarding Ukraine’s current position of strength. Supporting data highlights a massive surge in drone effectiveness, with Ukrainian forces increasingly using long-range strikes and innovative air defense tactics to maintain a decisive edge over Russian personnel and assets
