When the Pittsburgh Steelers cut NFL linebacker James Harrison mid-season, the New England Patriots signed him faster than you can shout “blitz!” Prior to the season Men’s Journal spent a few days in Scottsdale, AZ while Mr. Harrison recovered from surgery.
As the NFL’s most heavily fined player in a single season, he’s the type of player you hate to play against, but love to have on your team. After reading the article, I appreciate even more why Pittsburgh fans were so upset to see this God fearing, gun loving player go.
As Your Survival Guy, I had to laugh out loud reading how he dealt with a rattlesnake. Fear of snakes? Not Harrison. “I grabbed a rattler by his tail and threw him over the fence last month.”
“You grabbed a rattler bare handed?” asks Men’s Journal columnist Paul Solotaroff.
“Had to,” he says. “My son was here visiting, so that bitch had to bounce out. ASAP.”
How about his take on gun control:
“[A]nd if you ever get him going on gun control, better whip out your Kevlar notepad. (Harrison says the answer to campus shootings is to arm all the teachers and students.) But then, without prompting, he’ll turn on a dime and offer a sober plank on player safety, saying the league should trim the season to 14 games, begin off-season training activities in May, not March, and cut training camp down to just a couple of weeks of one-a-day practices, not two. That way, he says, “we’re not bangin’ heads so much in August; that’s where the brain trauma comes from.”
