OK, let me give you a bit of advice on tipping for the next time you’re in Paris: You’re not in America. Tipping in Paris is appreciated but not expected. But it should be done with care because simply throwing down twenty percent of the tab can be viewed as too American.
In Paris, working as a server is a profession. You make a living wage. It’s your job. You don’t rely on tips, but you will take them from an unsuspecting tourist. Those in the know leave a few coins or Euros, but it’s tastefully done.
There are some instances where the service is so above and beyond it’s fine to tip twenty percent, but the norm is up to ten percent and often below. What you’re trying to avoid is the server kissing his way up your spouse’s arm when you tell him how much to add to l’addition.
As an aside, if you want to add the tip to your credit card, you need to say so before they run your card tableside. Be prepared to do a little math. Not always easy under pressure, but you got this.
