In my conversations with you, we tend to talk about stuff other than the stock market. Yes, we talk about the market and Iran, and then we talk about what’s going on in your life; Trips you’re looking forward to, Easter with your family, and life in general. It’s a relaxed setting like talking with an old friend. It’s funny how much we all have in common.
You may be surprised by this, and I know many of you don’t want to “bother” me by calling because you think my phone is lit up with worried investors. But it’s not. I’m not fielding calls from nervous wrecks hanging on by a thread, living and dying by the price of oil. Sure, we all know the score and see the prices at the pump.
I remember talking with a client about this time last year during the tariff situation. “We’ll be talking about something different this time next year,” he said. Maybe the most useful words I heard at the time. Another client put it this way, “You just don’t know.” Which could be an appropriate refrigerator magnet.
What’s troublesome is the surplus of overconfident investors who speak like they’re the chosen one—all-knowing. The one who is never in doubt and often wrong and never around when the truth comes out. You and I should be congratulated for our patience with this misguided fellow.
And yet, when you get to a certain point in life, you just don’t want to get into it with this guy. You also don’t want to fool around with your investments all that much. It’s not what makes you tic. Never has been.
But you need to have someone you trust to take the wheel. And that’s not easy. That’s hard.
