When you graduate from work to retirement, there are boxes that need to be checked, and if you’re moving, unpacked. One of those boxes is choosing the right custodian of your money in retirement.

“Hey, Survival Guy, aren’t all custodians the same?” you ask. Not necessarily. Yes, when you’re young, you don’t worry too much about your custodian. If you participate in a company 401(k), it’s already chosen for you unless you choose to self-direct it. You just save and save and save, do your job, and think about retirement later.
But when later becomes today, you need to worry about stuff like who your custodian is. Which brings me to that awful word: worry.
No one wants to worry about their money. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done. Emotions and worry about money build because of two things: One, you’re dealing with more money than you have ever had, and two, you no longer receive a paycheck. Those are gut wrenching concerns.
Do not take this the wrong way, but Your Survival Guy doesn’t get emotional about other people’s money. I take it dead seriously. I don’t have time to worry. I spend the time it requires listening to you and understanding what you’re looking for.
That’s the type of relationship you want to have with your money guy, don’t you think? Not worrying about your custodian, but how your goals will be met.
