Lessons From the Swedish Welfare State – Andreas Bergh and Magnus Henrekson, The Wall Street Journal
There is no doubt that the size of government has a negative correlation to the speed of growth of an economy. The authors point out that as the Swedish government has grown and grown, its economy has slowed and slowed. The opposite trend can be seen in China where, as the economy has been liberalized, there has been tremendous growth. It is obvious to anyone what direction economic prosperity lies in for the U.S. Smaller government and lower taxes. The Obama administration should start by demanding that Congress make permanent the Bush tax cuts. – Dick Young
Obama’s Wrong-headed Immigration Suit – Randy Pullen, Human Events
As I have written before there can simply be no tolerance for illegal immigration. That President Obama and his attorney general, Eric Holder, are attacking Arizona for attempting to uphold the law is pitiful and divisive in a time when America’s leaders should be uniting the country. Illegal immigrants should be put through the same rigors that legal immigrants have been if they expect to remain in the U.S. No amnesty should be allowed for those who came here illegally. These aren’t refugees, they’re people who refuse to pay taxes or operate under the same rules as everyone else. – Timothy Jones
The World Isn’t Waiting on Free Trade – Mike Johanns, The Wall Street Journal
The president made doubling America’s exports a top priority. But he won’t sign the free trade agreement with Colombia. Why? The President is torn between actually helping the country by increasing the volume of exports, and helping the unions that put him into power. The Democrats’ major funders are the unions, who hate the idea of free trade that may eat into their oversized paychecks. The president is the president for all Americans, not just the unions, and he should sign the Colombian free trade agreement because it is good for the majority of Americans. – Dick Young
Opposition to Kagan Nomination Continues to Build – Connie Hair, Human Events
Democrats need the support of at least two Republicans to pass a confirmation of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. More and more Republicans continue to voice their opposition but a host of the more liberal GOP members have still not weighed in. Lindsey Graham should be considered the head of this group. If he opposes Kagan, look for other liberal Republicans to follow on his heals. – Dick Young
