Battle for the Senate

October 5, 2010 By Richard C. Young

Battle for the Senate – Dick Young

Americans are staring down the barrel of a serious lame-duck session of Congress coming after the November elections. Jim DeMint calls it the “Fired Congress,” and wants to bar it from hiking up the size of government. DeMint is arguing for legislation that would prohibit lame-duck Democrats and Republicans from stuffing bills full of pork on their way out of town. His bill to prohibit earmarks for this year and next is numbered S.2990.

But DeMint has a more effective way of controlling the post-election Congress. Numerous seats in the Senate will be seated almost immediately after the election, including Barack Obama’s former Illinois seat. The race for that seat is currently being led by Republican Mark Kirk. Another state that could seat its senator right after the election is Delaware, Vice President Joe Biden’s former seat. GOP candidate Christine O’Donnell is lagging behind Democrat Chris Coons in Delaware by nine points. Conservatives need to come out hard behind O’Donnell. The GOP needs to move beyond the made-for-TV drama of her teen years and stand up for their candidate. Would they rather have the “Bearded Marxist,” Chris Coons sitting next to them in the Senate? I don’t think so.

There are more races that conservatives can vote in to help determine the fate of the lame-duck session. Republican John Raese is beating the popular governor of West Virginia, Joe Manchin in a race everyone thought would be ripe for Machin’s taking. Raese would be seated directly after the election to replace the late Robert Byrd for the remainder of his term.

Colorado’s Ken Buck is almost a shoo-in at this point, with a big lead on sitting senator Michael Bennet. Senator Bennet was installed by the governor of Colorado after President Obama named former Colorado senator, Arne Duncan, as his education secretary. This seat will be seated before the lame-duck session, and you can be sure Buck is up to the task of stopping Democrats in their tracks.

Conservatives need to rally for one more month of hard press against the Democrat controlled Senate, and the Obama administration’s radical agenda. Jim DeMint is leading the charge to elect conservatives to the Senate with his Take America Back PAC. You can do your part by voting for the candidates he has listed on his website.

Support Michelle Rhee – E.J. Smith

If President Obama is truly serious about reforming our schools why isn’t he supporting the most successful school reformer in the history of our nation’s capital, Michelle Rhee? Mr. Obama was silent when the Mayor who appointed her, Fenty, was fighting for his political life and lost in the primary. By doing nothing it speaks volumes about Obama’s support for unions, especially the Randi Weingarten led union, American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Watch just a few minutes of these videos with “Waiting for Superman” director Davis Guggenheim, school reformist Michelle Rhee and “Waiting for Superman” hero Geoffrey Canada.
