Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and SIG SAUER have successfully completed a firing test of FIRE STORM 250, an innovative tactical unmanned aerial system (UAS) equipped with SIG SAUER’s MICROLIGHT Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) and an M250 machine gun. The test demonstrated the system’s ability to integrate airborne surveillance, target identification, and precision firepower in a simulated battlefield environment. During the test, the system hovered, identified targets using its onboard camera, and fired in single-shot and semi-automatic modes at varying distances and altitudes.
FIRE STORM 250 can remain airborne for up to three hours and carry 200 rounds of ammunition, with a combat-ready weight of approximately 53 pounds, including the weapon station, machine gun, and ammunition. Its vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) configuration enables deployment from forward operating areas without runways or dedicated aviation infrastructure. Powered by a multi-fuel internal-combustion engine, the system can be refueled in the field. It also maintains a human-in-the-loop control architecture, allowing operators to receive real-time imagery and targeting data while retaining authority over weapon engagement decisions.
The system supports missions including close air support, persistent surveillance, intelligence gathering, border security, force protection, and special operations. Multiple systems can operate simultaneously to provide day-and-night surveillance and monitor potential threats. IAI emphasized the importance of integrating intelligence, technology, and operational capabilities, while SIG SAUER highlighted the M250 machine gun’s range, belt-fed design, and weight advantages. Overall, the successful test demonstrates FIRE STORM 250’s potential to provide tactical forces with a rapidly deployable airborne platform that combines persistent situational awareness and remotely controlled firepower while maintaining human oversight.
