On June 1, 2025, Ukraine launched its longest-range drone strike of the war, destroying 41 Russian aircraft across four air bases and causing $7 billion in damage. The attack, using 117 drones hidden near Russian bases, was described by war bloggers as “Russia’s Pearl Harbor.” It came just before U.S.-brokered peace talks in Istanbul, amid escalating attacks from both sides, according to Cybele Mayes-Osterman of USA TODAY. President Zelensky called it a major success, while President Trump criticized Putin’s aggression and warned of stalled negotiations. She writes:
