How to Prepare Your School Before Tragedy Strikes

May 10, 2019 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Back in February of 2018 I explained some steps parents could use to prepare their children for an emergency at school. Children though, aren’t the only ones who need to be prepared. The entire school system should have some idea of what should be done in an active shooter scenario.

To prepare school officials and security personnel, the NRA has developed a program it calls NRA School Shield (NSS). The NSS was developed to protect children by teaching designated school officials how to assess their school’s vulnerabilities. The NRA magazine America’s 1st Freedom explains the program, writing:

In 2019, NSS will have its busiest year yet—with 16 trainings scheduled in just the first half of the year. To date, NSS has completed trainings in: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington. By June 2019, more than half of the 50 states will have taken advantage of this popular training.

To facilitate the vital partnership between schools and their local law enforcement agencies, the NSS requires both a k-12 school and a local law enforcement agency to serve as co-hosts for the week-long training—which is free to host, free to attend and provided by the NRA. Conducted in both a classroom and in the field at a local school campus by certified NR Ainstructors (who are current or former law enforcement officers), the NSS Security Assessor Training focuses on detecting threat potential and security weaknesses day and night as well as on and around a school campus.

Through this training, School Resource Officers, School Security Officers, supervisors within community policing units, school facilities personnel and other officials tasked with a direct responsibility for school security, benefit from a week of specialized training, networking and practical exercises at a local K-12 school. Training topics include the assessment process, physical-security components, emergency-response protocols, emerging technologies and more.

Members can take advantage of this essential hands-on curriculum and help make their area schools more secure. To learn more about bringing the NSS Security Assessor Training to your area or register for one of the free trainings scheduled in 2019, contact NRA School Shield at (844) 467-7723 or info@nraschoolshield.org. For more information, visit nraschoolshield.org/training.

If your children are in school, they deserve the very safest campus they can get. Training school officials to identify and address weaknesses is necessary in providing a safe environment for students.
