I don’t normally write about the First Lady. She is generally out supporting causes for children and gardening at the White House. But her Spanish vacation is too much to ignore. For those of you who haven’t seen or heard, the First Lady and her friends reserved upwards of 60 rooms in a five-star castle-like hotel in Spain for a vacation. The president did not attend.
Although the First Lady paid for her own room, this vacation will surely cost taxpayers millions. Putting up an army of Secret Service agents in five-star accommodations isn’t cheap, you know.
After the president has repeatedly hammered corporate executives for flying to Las Vegas for conventions, it seems a bit surprising that Mrs. Obama would spend such a luxurious vacation on your dime. The double standards of this administration never cease to amaze.
Presumably at the same time it was planning this extravagant trip, the First Lady’s office was also ordering up dresses for Mrs. Obama from European designers. Is that what the office of the First Lady is for? And what happened to the outrage when Sarah Palin got a fashion upgrade? Now the First Lady is sourcing couture on the taxpayer dime, and the media is writing fluff pieces about it.
The media fluffing of the Obamas is not limited to the First Lady. The president has turned himself (and his office) into a celebrity figure with little respect. From late-night talk shows to appearances on daytime TV, he has thrown out the presidential decorum rule book. But with the public focused on the president’s depth of knowledge regarding reality TV stars, why would they pay any attention to the fact that America is being broken by his administration?
It is sad when the president and the First Lady are more interested in exploiting the office of the White House for personal splendor than in helping Americans. Maybe the Obamas already know they won’t be asked back to the White House in 2013, so they’re living it up while they still can.
