
At the Ron Paul Institute, former congressman and presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul suggests that the “Adoption of the income tax signified the abandonment of the belief that individuals have inalienable rights granted them by the Creator.” Paul applies the same criticism to the draft system, concluding:
Income taxes, along with the military draft and other types of mandated “service,” are incompatible with a free society and should be opposed by all who value liberty and peace. As Ronald Reagan said in a statement that could be modified to apply to income taxes, the draft “rests on the assumption that your kids belong to the state…. That assumption isn’t a new one. The Nazis thought it was a great idea.”

Of course, the income tax was adopted by Woodrow Wilson, America’s worst president. Wilson was also the first president to use the draft for a foreign war, signing the Selective Service Act of 1917. Previously, the draft had only been employed in the Revolutionary War and the American Civil War, both wars fought on American soil.
