Judgement at Columbia

“Globalize the Intifada” Meets a Reckoning

Anti-Semitism is alive and well in the United States. Albeit with a difference, reports Roger Kimball in The Spectator USA.

In the US, virulent antisemitism is largely an elite phenomenon, Mr. Kimbell argues.

It thrives in the Petri dishes of swank colleges and universities and a handful of cities. That’s where you see the Palestinian flags and shouts of “globalize the intifada.”

It is also, Mr. Kimball is happy to announce, where the Trump administration’s battle against anti-Semitism has enjoyed its most conspicuous victories.

The NY Post Headline:

“Columbia University to pay out more than $220M after violating Jewish students’ civil rights in massive win for Trump administration.”

 More Pressure

The settlement, under which Columbia will agree to submit to independent monitoring to ensure it is complying with merit-based hiring and admissions requirements, is likely to put pressure on other schools — like Harvard University— that have crossed the White House over tolerance of extreme Jew-hatred on campus since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas against Israel.

The resolution comes after just four months of negotiations between Columbia and Trump, striking a stark contrast with Harvard, which decided to drag the administration into court for stripping the school of $2.6 billion in grants and other funding.

Concessions from Columbia:

  • Agrees to pay the federal government $200 million to settle claims of unlawful racial discrimination
  • Agrees to pay $20 million to Jewish employees to settle claims of post 7 October civil rights violations.
  • Agrees to share “relevant data” on foreign applicants with the US government.
  • Agrees to implement ban on masked protests, maintain a trained security force, abd cooperate with NYPD to limit disturbances.
  • Disciplinary matters moved to purview of Office of the Provost from faculty senate.
  • Agree to the establishment of an independent monitor and administration to ensure compliance.

Republican lawmakers assure Americans that they are working to determine if new legislation is needed to hold university leaders more accountable amid a troubling uptick of anti-Israel sentiment on campuses nationwide.
