Russian military forces have reportedly lost access to Starlink satellite internet across much of the Ukraine front line after Ukraine and SpaceX implemented a “white list” system that allows only registered, authorized terminals to operate.

Pro‑Russian military bloggers and Ukrainian commanders say the outages began on Feb. 5, 2026, with many Russian Starlink units disconnecting and failing to reconnect, disrupting battlefield communication and coordination.

Elon Musk posted on X Feb 1st, 2026: “Looks like the steps we took to stop the unauthorized use of Starlink by Russia have worked. Let us know if more needs to be done.”

A Ukrainian adviser described the situation for Russian troops as a “catastrophe,” saying command and control systems have collapsed in some areas, though the precise impact on both sides’ operations is still emerging. The move is part of Ukraine’s effort to prevent Russian forces from using Starlink, which had become important for communications and drone control on the battlefield. The Kyiv Independent writes:

A new “white list” from SpaceX is shutting off Russia’s illicit access to Starlink’s satellite internet across the front line.

At shortly before 3:00 a.m. Kyiv time on Feb. 5, Elon Musk retweeted a new guide from Ukraine’s Digital Transformation Ministry for registering a Starlink terminal within Ukraine. […]

“They have been cut off completely. Potentially it will mean their activity will drop while they find alternative means of communication.” Petro, a drone commander in the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade fighting near Zaporizhzhia, told the Kyiv Independent. […]

Since the start of 2025, Russia has outfitted some of its deep-strike Shahed drones with Starlink terminals, allowing them to remain connected to their operators deeper into Ukraine than any other technology allows. Russian frontline units have also become dependent on that internet access.
