The Chaotic State of Iran Negotiations

Does anyone know what’s happening in the Iran negotiations? Vice President JD Vance had to make a statement on X.com today to quell the rumors of what appeared to be a very bad deal for the United States, supposedly “leaked” by the Iranians. The rumored terms, as posted by many (but this specific list posted by British war journalist @WarMonitor3) are:

Iranian media have leaked the new US-Iran deal:

Iran refuses to discuss missile programme or proxies

-Ending the conflict on all fronts including Lebanon -US ending the blockade in 30 days

-The US not interfering in Iranian affairs -The US withdrawing forces completely from around Iran

-Reopening the strait of Hormuz

-An Ending of sanctions on Iranian oil exports

-The US and its allies commiting to an 300 billion reconstruction plan.

-Irans complete commitment to not pursue a nuclear weapon and a 60 day period of discussing nuclear issues

-US commitment to not deploy more forces or add more sanctions during talks.

-The release of half of the 24 billion in Iranian frozen assets the other half when nuclear issues reached

In response to these rumored terms, Vice President Vance explained:

I’m seeing a lot of fake information about a potential deal to reopen the Strait and end Iran’s nuclear weapons program. First, the Iranians are not receiving any cash, and no funds are being released for simply signing a deal or attending a meeting. The deal is structured to ensure that the US and its allies concerns are prioritized, and that if the Islamic Republic of Iran meets its obligations, then economic benefits will flow to them and to the entire region. This deal has the potential to remake the region and lead to lasting peace.

I’ve noticed a couple of bizarre things in the reporting over the last few hours. First, people who (rightly) said Donald Trump was a historic president a month ago now criticizing a deal based on unconfirmed media reports. Second, people who say you can’t trust a word said by the IRGC who apparently believe anonymously sourced social media posts.

The president is going to get us a good outcome, one way or the other.

The President also addressed the rumors, writing on Truth Social:

The terms that Iran leaked out to the Fake News have NOTHING to do with the terms that were agreed to, in writing. What they said, including their weak and pathetic statement on having a deal, bears no relation to the truth. Very dishonorable people to deal with. With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith. AMAZING! Also, their totally rebuffed Drone attack last night against Indian Ships leaving the Hormuz Strait is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. They better get their act together, and FAST! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Yesterday, the President posted about progress on negotiations, writing on Truth Social:

Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening. Discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others. The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized — Time and place of the signing to be announced shortly.

DONALD J. TRUMP
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

But the FARS News Agency, which is closely aligned with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has disputed the idea that the United States and Iran were close to a finalized agreement of peace. They wrote:

A source close to Iran’s negotiating team said that reports claiming a final agreement has been reached between Iran and the United States are entirely inaccurate.

Speaking to Fars News Agency, the source stated that claims made by US President Donald Trump and some foreign media outlets suggesting that a final agreement has been concluded and is scheduled to be signed in Geneva on Sunday are completely false.

The informed source added that Iran’s review and decision-making process has not yet been finalized. Therefore, both the reported signing date of Sunday and the proposed venue of Geneva are categorically denied.
