Harris: An Empty Vessel on Policy
Senator Joe Manchin will not endorse Kamala Harris for president. When Kamala emphasized her support of bypassing the Senate’s filibuster rule if needed to protect abortion rights, Manchin erupted on CNN:
She knows the filibuster is the holy grail of democracy. It’s the only thing that keeps us talking and working together. If she gets rid of that, then this would be the House on steroids.
On Wisconsin Public Radio, Harris reiterated her support for eliminating the filibuster on abortion-rights legislation. Such a move would enable a bill to pass with a simple majority rather than the 60 votes currently required for most legislation.
Continued Harris:
I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe. And get us to the point where 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do.”
Shame on Harris
According to Manchin, the filibuster “promotes bipartisan cooperation and guards against partisan whiplash and dysfunction.”
A Deepening Sense of Irony
Manchin was backed up by Sen. Sinema., who said,
To state the supremely obvious, eliminating the filibuster to codify Roe v. Wade also enables a future Congress to ban all abortion nationwide.
Asked on CNN if his latest comments mean that he will no longer back Kamala Harris, Manchin replied:
That ain’t going to happen. I think that basically can destroy our country.
Now, here’s a surprise: “The Harris campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, “reports the WSJ.
