Nancy Pelosi is increasingly confident that she will once again be Speaker of the House in January, but not all Democrats are so keen on returning the well-worn, and unpopular Pelosi to the leadership role. To gain their support, Pelosi is offering a deal, she’ll come back as a “transitional” Speaker, until the next Congress, when presumably someone else will take charge. The Hill reports:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has a new pitch in her bid for Speaker: She’ll consider stepping down at the end of the next Congress.
The idea of a “transitional” Speaker, a term the 78-year-old California Democrat has floated in recent days, appears designed to win over younger lawmakers who are clamoring for generational change in the leadership ranks but have yet to line up a credible challenger.
The strategy could allow more time for the next Democratic leader to emerge while also providing cover for the slew of candidates distancing themselves from Pelosi on the campaign trail.
“The reality is, she herself has said she doesn’t want to do this forever,” freshman Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who represents a Bay Area district near Pelosi’s, told The Hill in a telephone interview. “Everyone knows there’s gonna be a transition. And everyone knows we don’t have a logical successor.”
“It’s going to take some time to figure who is going to be our next leader, so there’s a natural progression that will take place,” he added.
However, Democrats still need to win what promises to be a tough election before they can setup their own leadership. The only polls that matter take place on November 6. Will Americans decide to return to the bad-old-days of anemic economic growth and government control, or vote to support the boom times brought on by President Trump’s economic reforms? For a sample of his success, take a look at the slideshow below comparing the booming Trump era to the barely growing Obama era.
