Senator Jeff Flake’s surprise retirement announcement has paved the way for his primary opponent, Kelli Ward, a doctor and former Arizona state senator. Ward was running to the right of Flake who, after a strong career as a reformer in the House, had disappointed conservatives with his stint in the Senate.
Ward already had the backing of the grass roots conservatives in Arizona, but now broader support may materialize.
To solidify her position on the right, Ward hammered GOP leadership last night on Fox News.
Ward is a supporter of the Trump “America First” agenda, and has gotten the backing of his former advisor, Steve Bannon. Bannon plans on supporting a roster of pro-Trump Senate candidates across the country. Bannon and conservative radio personality Laura Ingraham spoke at a fundraiser for Ward last week.
