You would not know it by the polls, but Newt Gingrich stands heads and shoulders above the field in the ongoing series of Republican debates. Newt comes across as the PhD in the field, while the others sound like some form of incoming freshmen. Strip the debates down to a hardball one on one debate, and Newt’s calm demeanor and in-depth knowledge and grasp of the complete spectrum of issues make him an easy winner.
