House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.) have announced that the House of Representatives will conduct its own investigation into the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump and what failures may have led to its occurrence. The Wall Street Journal’s Sadie Gurman reports:
WASHINGTON—The top House leaders from both parties are setting up a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump and the stunning security failures that allowed it to happen.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.) announced the panel Tuesday, a day after a blistering congressional hearing in which Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle refused to answer most questions about the July 13 shooting at a campaign rally. Her performance fueled bipartisan anger and widespread calls for her resignation. Cheatle resigned Tuesday.
“The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking,” Johnson and Jeffries said in a statement. The panel, made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats, will have the power to issue subpoenas, they said, and will “move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability and make certain such failures never happen again.”
