“Survival Guy,” my father-in-law Dick Young, said to me yesterday morning on a regular call, “how many times have you heard me say how much I made in the market?”
Putting my coffee down, he said, “Exactly, never. I never have.”
“Sure,” he said, “I would tell readers of IR (Richard C. Young’s Intelligence Report) about seven-figure purchases I would make, but I mostly stayed away from talking about how much I made in the market. Which, by the way, was over seven figures last month, in my mostly fixed-income portfolio. I don’t compare what I’m doing with the next guy. What does he have to do with me?”
As I was about to answer, he said. “Exactly, nothing.”
“You can let your clients know. Tell them it’s a numbers game. It’s about being patient, avoiding doing stupid things, and you know what? I’m living proof it works.”
“How are you?” he asked. “I heard you got some snow. It’s 75 and sunny in Key West. Look forward to seeing you and the fam next month. Make it a good day.”
