‘Under Pressure, the Democrats Are Cracking.’ – Jim Geraghty, National Review
The rumblings of GOP-majority in the Senate are a little premature, but welcome all the same. A Senate split 51-49, GOP to Democrat, is conceivable on paper, and given the direction of the mood around the country could actually happen. It would however need a lot of “ifs” to go the right way for Republicans. It should be remembered too that many of the GOPers that look to gain seats in the Senate aren’t exactly conservative names. People like Mike Castle and Mark Kirk are about as liberal as a GOP senator can come. The House, though, is an entirely different story. The GOP needs to win 40 seats. That’s certainly doable. Look for a major sea change in the House in November. There are many governors races too that are just as important around the country, for a look at some of them, check out the Top 10 Races of 2010. – Timothy Jones
Sessions on Kagan’s Activism and Worldview: “Toxic Combination” – Jason Mattera, Human Events
Elena Kagan has refused to recuse herself from any judgment on Obamacare. Senator Jeff Sessions has pushed for her to recuse herself if she was asked to judge the law. In the video below Sessions questions Kagan’s judicial philosophy, one of expansion and he says that the American people are not happy with this philosophy. So why are GOP senators lined up to confirm Kagan? – Dick Young
Discretionary Defense – Jed Babbin, The American Spectator
There is no doubt that there is room to trim defense spending, the first stops for spending cutters should be the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But, before cuts to a constitutionally mandated military are made, unconstitutional spending should be zapped from the budget. There are any number of departments – Education, Health and Human Services, Labor – that should be cut immediately due to a lack of constitutional mandate. The military is one of the very few departments actually mentioned in the constitution and should obviously be kept. That isn’t to say, of course, that there isn’t massive waste in a military contract program that accepts bids and then doesn’t enforce them. There can be no better view of the ridiculous priorities of the Obama administration than when it cut the F-22 program and funded a “jobs bills” to reward its union allies. – Dick Young
Crist Uses His Old Party as a New Foil – Peter Wallsten, The Wall Street Journal
Right now the balance of the Florida Senate race hangs in what happens in the Democratic primary. If Kendrick Meeks, the establishment Democrat, wins he will get the support of the party and independent Charlie Crist will likely lose much of the left-wing attention he has built up. On the other hand, if Jeff Greene wins, look for the Democratic establishment to immediately abandon ship and put their backing behind Crist. Greene is seen as a rogue agent in the race for the Democratic nomination and the establishment wants nothing more than to see him lose. So I predict this race will play out like this, if Meeks wins the primary, Crist loses the liberal vote and Marco Rubio, the Republican, wins the senate seat. If Greene wins, Crist gets a load of new support from Democrats and wins the senate seat. I never thought I would want Kendrick Meeks to win anything, but right now I’m sure hoping he wins the Democratic primary in Florida. – Timothy Jones
Stimulating Unemployment – Review & Outlook, The Wall Street Journal
A lot is said about a president’s economic policy failure when he is arguing to extend jobless benefits to nearly two years. Where are the real job creation solutions? What happened to the ‘stimulus’ that was supposed to create a tidal wave of green energy and infrastructure jobs? – Dick Young
Why Hasn’t Israel Bombed Iran (Yet)? – Bret Stephens, The Wall Street Journal
The idea of a war between Iran and Israel, in which the U.S. would most assuredly be embroiled, is not an enjoyable one to think of. Many in the neocon crowd have been pushing for this for a long time (Flashback: John McCain “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran”). – Dick Young
