“Congress Doesn’t Have a Whole Lot of Core Responsibilities”

August 27, 2013 By Richard C. Young

What American in his right mind would author such stupidity? As Pat Buchanan notes here, our president, Barack Obama, that’s who. How Americans voted this guy in twice as president beats me, but I guess the candidacies of John McCain and Mitt Romney were reasons enough to seek an option. But a candidate with a postage-stamp-size resume like Barack Obama? Here Pat correctly reminds readers that Congress is the first branch of government. Now we have Barack Obama readying to drag America into a Syrian civil conflict where there is no U.S. national security interest. As Pat points out, Congress at least can come back to Washington and tell Obama he has no authority to drag us into another war. His Libyan adventure, which gave us the Benghazi massacre and cover-up, was his last hurrah as war president. The original Weinberger/Powell Doctrine offered five essential elements regarding America’s interest in foreign intervention. Cato Institute’s Chris Preble enumerates the five key points here. The current Syrian mess is a zero on the five pivotal elements. As such Barack Obama needs to stand clear of civil war in Syria.
