After nearly failing to assemble enough votes for confirmation in the Senate, Betsy DeVos will be the next Secretary of Education of the United States. Vice President Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote to confirm DeVos. The education activist from Michigan was protested heavily by the National Education Association and other teachers’ unions, along with the Democrats in the Senate and even two GOP Senators, Susan Collins from Maine and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska. Incidentally, both are recipients of teachers’ union campaign donations.
DeVos is a strong supporter of school choice, which is anathema to the unions. She is also the sister of former BlackWater CEO, Erik Prince, a Trump supporter and former Navy SEAL who says the President’s plan to work with Russia to defeat the common enemy of ISIS.
