CHESA BOUDIN RECALL: The Canary in the Coal Mine

You may have watched last night as the results came in in San Francisco’s recall election for radical woke DA, Chesa Boudin. You can read more about him here, and here, but what you really need to know is that Boudin is one of a slew of George Soros-backed DAs across America who have worked hard to make the justice system serve criminals, not victims.

About 60% of San Francisco voters supported recalling Boudin. The city is still one of the most progressive in the country, but the recall of Boudin shows that even San Franciscans have their limits. It turns out rampant crime and unchecked homelessness are those limits. The Wall Street Journal’s Zusha Elinson and Christine Mai-Duc report on Boudin’s loss, writing:

San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin was recalled Tuesday in a blow to the progressive prosecutors movement.

Voters strongly endorsed ousting the reform-minded D.A. as partial returns showed about 60% of voters supporting the recall, the Associated Press said.

Mr. Boudin and other progressive prosecutors around the country have pursued goals such as sending nonviolent drug offenders to treatment instead of jail, sparing juveniles from being prosecuted as adults and scrutinizing police misconduct.

Political consultants and law-enforcement officials say the recall of Mr. Boudin in this left-leaning city signals a broader voter backlash against the movement amid rising violent crime over the past two years.

The recall campaign accused Mr. Boudin of being too soft on crime, an argument that found support with residents upset over persistent petty theft, drug use and homelessness.

Crime overall declined since Mr. Boudin took office in January 2020, but burglaries have risen 45% in the past two years and homicides have increased 37% over the same period. The city’s homicide rate is still lower than in many other major cities.

In forceful speech Tuesday night, during which he shouted at times, Mr. Boudin said he was proud of the reforms he enacted during his 2½ years in office.

“We have already won because we have redefined the way people think about the role of the district attorney’s office,” he said.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed—a Democrat who previously criticized Mr. Boudin but didn’t take a position on the recall—will appoint a replacement for him.

At a polling place on San Francisco’s more politically moderate west side, Maureen Hurley said Mr. Boudin did little to stem the city’s crime problem.

“As a registered Democrat, I enthusiastically voted for his recall,” said Ms. Hurley, a 62-year-old chief financial officer. “Boudin has proved over and over again he is mismatched to his job description of prosecuting habitual criminals and working with the police. He was a complete failure.”

Boudin’s recall, coupled with the election of Ann Davison (R) as Seattle’s City Attorney, shows that even in the most progressive cities in America, residents still believe the government should protect them from criminals, not help them get out of jail.

Action Line: Boudin’s recall could be the canary in the coal mine for radical Democrat DAs. You don’t want to live in a city where one of the Soros-backed DAs is responsible for protecting you and your family. If you already do, look for a better America today. P.S. If you live in or near the jurisdiction of one of these radical DAs, you want to get your gun and your training now.
