The U.S. Navy has selected Boeing to produce its next-generation F/A-XX fighter, a sixth-generation aircraft intended to replace the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornets. The multibillion-dollar program is designed to provide greater range and capacity while incorporating advanced mission systems and an open architecture that lets new capabilities be integrated more quickly.
The F/A-XX award is Boeing’s second major U.S. sixth-generation fighter program, following its selection for the Air Force’s F-47 in 2025. Boeing says it has invested in facilities, technology, and personnel to develop both aircraft programs simultaneously, including a new secure manufacturing facility in St. Louis that will use advanced digital design and production methods.
Specific performance and technical details remain classified. The Navy’s selection marks a major step toward replacing its current Super Hornet fleet with a more advanced carrier-based combat aircraft, although the program’s detailed capabilities, schedule, and overall cost remain undisclosed.
