Sheriffs in Polk County are preparing to deal with the challenges posed by criminals armed with artificial intelligence technologies. WFLA reports:
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said law enforcement needs to be well-versed in artificial intelligence in order to stay one step ahead of criminals.
The department partnered with Florida Polytechnic University to create S.A.I.L, the Sheriff’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
During a press conference Friday, the sheriff played an A.I. generated video of Elon Musk.
“I wasn’t surprised though knowing that Sheriff Grady Judd is always implementing the best technology to keep this county safe,” Musk said in the video.
While the sheriff appreciated the compliment, he made it clear, this video was not real.
“This is fake in a real world. And we’re frightened to death of the negatives of A.I.,” Judd said.
With the help of FPU, they will identify A.I. trends and tactics to find bad actors.
There has been criticism of A.I. use in law enforcement, specifically predictive policing.
“Nothing could be more important than to make sure of the accuracy and the fairness, and the fact that it is not capable of a bias so the reality of it is, that’s why you have to have the human element,” the Sheriff said.
The unit will have FPU students, technicians, and detectives. When asked about the cost, the sheriff said it’s not expensive in today’s world.
