Texas Poised to Become 21st Permitless Carry State

The Texas legislature has passed a bill that will allow the state to join 20 others as a permitless carry state. The bill is awaiting Gov. Greg Abbot’s signature. The governor has signaled he will sign it, making Texas the 21st permitless carry state in America. The Wall Street Journal reports:

Life Comes at You Fast. Slow It Down with My Friday Email. It’s Free.

Supporters of the bill say it would allow Texans to better defend themselves in public while abolishing unnecessary impediments to the constitutional right to bear arms. Once signed into law, Texas will join nearly two dozen other states that allow some form of unregulated carry of a handgun.

Texas already allows rifles to be carried in public without a license. The measure sent to Mr. Abbott would allow anyone age 21 or older to carry a handgun as long as they don’t have violent crime convictions or some other legal prohibition in their background. But there would be no way to weed them out without the state background check currently in the licensing process.

The bill wouldn’t prevent businesses from banning guns on their property, and federal background checks for some gun purchases would remain in place. Texas has no state restrictions on private gun sales.

Texas follows closely behind Tennessee and Iowa, where governors signed similar bills in April. The current list of 20 states which, by the end of the year will not require a permit to carry is below (check start dates and residency requirements in any state you wish to carry in. In some states where legislation has been signed, it has not yet come into effect.):

  1. Alaska
  2. Arizona
  3. Arkansas
  4. Idaho
  5. Iowa
  6. Kansas
  7. Kentucky
  8. Maine
  9. Mississippi
  10. Missouri
  11. Montana
  12. New Hampshire
  13. North Dakota
  14. Oklahoma
  15. South Dakota
  16. Tennessee
  17. Utah
  18. Vermont
  19. West Virginia
  20. Wyoming

Action Line: Other states are likely to follow. If you want to live a life of liberty in retirement, it may be time to look for a better America today.
