Old-Fashioned Protectionism
President Trump’s aim was to clean the House, notes the WSJ. Kimberley Strassel understates the obvious when she states Trump’s style isn’t for everyone. His team, however, has cracked the code for making the substance count.
The president’s fifth congressional address was the most effective of his presidencies, presenting an administration of action and resolve. He drilled home his biggest priorities—with help from powerful audience invitees.
The first six weeks have seen a whirlwind of activities. Cascading out of the Oval Office –cuts, freezes, withdrawals, executive orders. Last night, President Trump dug into the initiatives he wants to sustain:
- DOGE to cut government waste
- Congressional funding for border control,
- Support for local police,
- Promoting tariffs as a matter of fairness while acknowledging a “little disturbance” to the economy.
Mr. Trump didn’t shy away from describing problems—crime, high prices, foreign unrest, fentanyl, reports Ms. Strassel. The overall message, however, was of renewal and resurgence.
That’s a message a lot of Americans have been waiting to hear.
Take a Stand for the Working Class
Barton Swain, Ms. Strassel’s colleague at the WSJ, notes that Trump’s best line of the night was simple: “The people elected me to do the job, and I’m doing it.”
Confirming Why Democrats Lost
Wiliam McGurn (also WSJ) writes about the absurd sight of Democratic women wearing pink to protest the negative effects they say. Trump’s policies have had an impact on women …
… this one day after not a single Democratic senator voted to protect female athletes by keeping males out of women’s and girls’ sports.
All Democrats did Tuesday night was confirm why they lost in November.
