Unethical but Not Illegal?
From a survey at the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Chicago:
-
8% of Democrats say that Joe Biden broke the law.
-
32% of Democrats say that Joe Biden’s actions were unethical but not illegal.
-
58% of Democrats say the president did nothing wrong.
As James Freeman in the WSJ points out, this is hardly the overwhelming vote of confidence that Mr. Biden would hope to receive from his partisan allies.
At the Associated Press: Josh Boak and Linley Sanders report:
Ethical concerns are casting a shadow over President Joe Biden as he seeks reelection amid investigations into his son Hunter and an impeachment inquiry with a poll showing that 35% of U.S. adults believe the president himself has done something illegal.
From a recent NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll:
-
38% of U.S. adults and a full 43% of independents—believe Joe Biden has done something illegal regarding Hunter Biden’s business dealings.
-
25% of adults and 28% of independents regarded Joe Biden’s conduct as unethical but not illegal.
Mr. Freeman notes how “reassuring” it is to see in both polls that “most Americans regard Joe Biden’s conduct as at least unethical because of course it was wrong to represent the United States overseas while a family member tagged along with his hand out.”
… the Bidens used the office of the vice presidency to benefit themselves in ways that would not have been possible in many countries and should not have been allowed by the Obama administration.
Perhaps neither the sordid Biden family enrichment schemes nor the successful 2020 efforts to suppress media coverage about them have come as much surprise to longtime political observers who remember the 1980s.
Back before anyone was saying that Joe Biden was too old to run for president, he had to abandon his quest for the 1988 Democratic nomination after giving voters reason to suspect he was too dishonest. As a 2019 New York Times story gently recalled, Mr. Biden was “prone to embellishment.”
