Why Isn’t the West Saying, “Thank You, How Can We Help?”
Is there another way we can repay Israel? After all, by defending itself, Israel has made one of the most important contributions to the “defense of Western civilization” in the last quarter of the century.
Look what a country smaller in area than New Jersey, with a population less than North Carolina’s and an economy smaller than that of Washington state, has done for all of us. As the anniversary of 7 October fast approaches, Gerard Baker in the WSJ thinks it’s a fitting time not only to redouble our expressions of sympathy and solidarity with Israel but also to show our gratitude and perhaps even admit our own shame.
Israel Is Prevailing
Israel has deterred thousands of terrorists who have been committed for decades to a savage theocratic ideology that has claimed so many lives across the region and the world. Israel has done this with extraordinary tactical accuracy, ending the life of not only Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader in Lebanon but also some of the worst evil on the planet. Israel has repelled the advancing power of the Republic of Iran, among the most terrifying autocracies.
Foes of the West, including Moscow and Beijing, both allies of Iran, have received the message: our system of free markets and free people, and the voluntary alliance network we have constructed to defend it, generates resources and capabilities of vast technical superiority. Also crucial is the reminder to our enemies that there are some willing and able to “pursue and defeat” our enemies, regardless of the risk to our own lives and resources.
The administration of Joe Biden/Kamala Harris says it’s a supposed friend of Israel, yet the Biden/Harris administration called for Israel to cease fire while Israel was burying its dead and Hamas was busy exterminating its Israeli hostages. This says more about “moral disorder in our own politics than about Israel’s motives and actions.”
Taking it a step further, in a brash Europe, the ruling class rewarded and nominally recognized Hamas and Hezbollah as a nonexistent Palestinian state before prosecuting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on bogus war crime charges.
Our ally is on the front lines of defense against our enemies – barbarians who want to see us all buried.
Mr. Baker worries that all this may sound blithe to the skeptical reader. Baker also recognizes the painful loss of innocent lives in Gaza and Lebanon, undoubtedly fueling the wrath of the enemy across the world.
