Will Western Tanks Be a Game Changer in Ukraine?

April 27, 2023 By Richard C. Young

A German Army Leopard II tank, assigned to 104th Panzer Battalion, moves through the Joint Multinational Readiness Center during Saber Junction 2012 in Hohenfels, Germany, Oct. 25.

In The American Spectator, Ellie Gardey reports that Western defense ministers like the U.K.’s Ben Wallace, believe an infusion of tanks into Ukraine could be a game changer in the country’s war effort against Russia. Gardey writes:

The U.K. and Poland have confirmed that they are planning on sending Ukraine modern tanks, a development that would be a major boon to the Ukrainian war effort.

Poland intends to send German-developed Leopard tanks, while the U.K. plans to send Challenger 2 tanks.

The Western tanks have the potential to revolutionize the war effort. Western main battle tanks have vastly superior firepower and armor over the Soviet-designed tanks that Ukraine is currently using. These tanks weigh over 60 tons and are thus much heavier than the 40–50 ton Soviet-designed tanks. The Western tanks would in all likelihood outmatch most of the tanks Russia is using, including its T-72. In addition, the Ukrainians have a severe shortage of spare parts and ammunition for their Soviet-designed tanks.

“It is clear that battle tanks could provide a game-changing capability to the Ukrainians,” said U.K. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

Ukraine says that it will need 300 Western tanks to liberate its land from Russian occupation.

Former Green Beret and congressional candidate Joe Kent suggests on War Room that giving tanks to the Ukrainians may not go as well as planned. Watch:
