Does China, the world’s biggest polluter, really care about the environment? Recently, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves visited China and announced a 600 million pound growth agreement with the country.
She details her trip in the speech before Parliament below:
At The Spectator, Ian Williams chides Reeves for her naive belief that China is acting in good faith on the environment, noting, “there is precious little evidence that the CCP gives a hoot about the planet.” He continues:
China is the world’s biggest polluter, responsible for about a third of the planet’s annual greenhouse emissions. It builds coal-fired power stations at a faster pace than the rest of the world put together and shows no sign of slowing down. Last year, coal plant construction reached its highest level in a decade, according to the thinktank Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air and Global Energy Monitor (GEM).They have previously estimated that new plants are being approved at the rate of two per week.
China burns more coal than the rest of the earth combined, and it has the skies to show for it. It seems naive to believe they’re serious about cleaning up their air or the world’s.

China now emits more CO2 than the entire developed world combined—completely cancelling out all the sacrifices you are being forced to make in the farcical pursuit of net zero. pic.twitter.com/HPsdMX9V7o
