Harris Embodies the Seinfeld Show: about Nothing
Holman Jenkins, in the WSJ, admits to wanting a “twinkle of original, liquid shrewdness,” especially on pressing matters landing on the desk in the Oval Office. Mr. Jenkins tries to envision Ms. Harris in a situation where there is a crisis lying unanswered on the desk in the Oval Office.
Kamala Harris, Hard to Imagine
I try to imagine words from (Kamala’a) mouth and whether they show a mastery of risk and opportunity. I have a hard time doing so.
Donald Trump has spoken millions of public words; there are memoirs and histories of his presidency. Along with chaos and eccentricity, the record shows him capable of being shrewd, realistic. He authorized Operation Warp Speed. He changed Iran’s every calculation by killing Soleimani but then didn’t respond to Iran’s response, saying he had made his point.
(Donald Trump) apparently understood that even unrealistic threats voiced by a U.S. president can complicate China’s thinking over Taiwan and Russia’s over Ukraine.
The Harris Cringe
Kamala Harris does show impressive ruthlessness, but it comes at a cost. Her ruthlessness suppresses any sign of searching intelligence or conviction on grounds that Trump exhaustion is all she needs to pave her way to the White House.
But voters, writes Holman Jenkins, want to know, as he does when confronted with a novel and dangerous set of circumstances, will Harris summon incisive, realistic judgment?
Here resides the big risk of her “vibes of joy” campaign, which could yet keep the race close.
Kamala Harris, Still Hidden
Harris’s effort has been superfluous in respect to the decisions Americans have to make. She has succeeded only in changing the subject from Kamala Harris, who she is, and how she came to the nomination.
Donald Trump had ways to let voters know there was more to Trump.
His long and public record of successful and unsuccessful risk-taking in business lent confidence that he possessed situational awareness to navigate real-world complexities and produce tolerable outcomes.
This, admits Jenkins, is what I keep looking for from (Kamala) Harris.
Iconic Trump, Genuine, Authentic
When Donald Trump visited McDonald’s, he did not pretend to be one of them, notes Christopher Roach in American Greatness. Trump showed respect and asked genuinely curious questions about how things are done. By lending his time and celebrity, Donald Trump “elevated the status of a job that often does not receive adequate respect.” The whole thing was masterful.
Kamala Harris is not cool. She looks unqualified and in over her head.
