The Clintons and Female Empowerment: The Last Straw?

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton participate in the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting and hold a one-on-one “conversation” during the Closing Plenary, at the Sheraton Midtown Hotel in New York, New York, on September 22, 2011. When SpectatorWorld’s Cockburn saw the trailer (watch below if you can stomach it) to Hillary and Chelsea’s new docu-series – Gutsy – he admits that it almost proved to be the final straw.

The two minute trailer begins with Hillary, fresh from sidestepping the Department of Justice, and Chelsea, fresh from ruining the end of Derry Girls, jump into a car and set off on their super-fun-girls’-trip.

Hillary tells viewers:

“We’re hitting the road to shine a light on women that inspire us to be older and braver.”

Profound

If that wasn’t bad enough, continues Cockburn, “Kate Hudson (admittedly Mr. C had reminded himself who she was by Googling) talks about how “leadership is like a rainbow.” How profound, mocks Cockburn!

Throughout the clip, the women discuss what it means to be gutsy. While other women, such as Kim Kardashian, used the term to self-promote how selfless and great they are, Hillary used it to tell the world that staying married to good ol’ Bill Clinton was the “gutsiest thing she ever did.”

Cockburn is sure that Monica Lewinsky, Paula Jones, Kathryn Willey, Gennifer Flowers and Juannita Broaddrick would agree.

Cockburn, afraid that he hadn’t given the series a fair shake, scoured the internet to get thoughts from other viewers. I thought it was about colon stuff, said one viewer. Another poetic viewer was afraid his eyes would melt.

The cast of empowered women includes Kim Kardashian, Megan Thee Stallion, Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer. It looks like Amy was sick of being the most hated woman on the planet and wanted to surround herself with more like-minded souls that do… not very much. In response to the trailer, one person asked Chelsea, “Did hanging out with women who have actual jobs make you feel inadequate?”

Cockburn was surprised by the former FLOTUS’s admitted fearing the camera. Hillary offered that it was outside her “comfort zone.” Sounding more than a little cynical, Cockburn wonders how a former first lady, senator, secretary of state, and two-time presidential candidate could be uneasy in front of a camera?

It looks like Chelsea Clinton has gained some real sleb friends from the series, Cockburn admiringly notes, as she recently told the world that she’s Team Kim.

Daughter Clinton admitted: “I’ve had to let go of Kanye, because it’s just, I can’t. Just the way that he has treated Kim Kardashian, the way that he has talked about women is unconscionable to me.”

Does someone want to remind her who her father is?

Cockburn is just so happy that Apple opted to dedicate its cameras to the perennially ignored Clinton girlbosses.

Cockburn bills himself as “mischief, mayhem and Washington gossip.” He advises readers to send tips and party invites to cockburn@thespectator.com.

Here’s the trailer for Gutsy. Steel your nerves.
