Cities of Despair: Federal Agents Heading in as You Escape

You and your family are rushing to escape the city. At the same time, the President is sending in federal agents to help local police forces quell riots and fight crime.

Tresa Baldas reports for the Detroit Free Press:

Federal law enforcement agencies have a message for Detroit: We are coming to help your city fight violence, not harass or intimidate your protesters.

“Let me be perfectly clear … there are no federal troops coming to Detroit, or anywhere in Michigan to interfere with protesters,” U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider said Wednesday.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and other agencies held a news conference Wednesday to explain the role that 42 new federal agents will play when they arrive in Detroit in two weeks as part of a new crime-fighting initiative announced by the White House last week.

Agents are arriving in cities where crime has gotten out of control. Baldas continues:

They’re coming, they say, because Detroit’s violent crime has gotten out of control: Homicides are up 31% and shootings are up 53%, with nealry 380 being shot in the last two months alone, including 63 deaths — that’s at least one killing a day by gunfire.
