The Rise of GM Howie Roseman: From Persistent Letters to NFL Powerhouse
Reuben Frank, Eagles Insider at NBC Sports Philadelphia, reported that in the late 1990s, Howie Roseman, a persistent law graduate with no football experience, sent daily letters to Eagles president Joe Banner. Impressed by his determination, Banner hired Roseman in 2000, starting his NFL career. Frank writes:
It was the late 1990s, and Joe Banner was president of an Eagles team that hadn’t won a playoff game since 1995, hadn’t been to a Super Bowl since 1980, hadn’t won a championship since 1960 and hadn’t even had a winning record since 1996.
That’s when the letters from a mysterious kid named Howie Roseman started landing on Banner’s desk.
Every day. […]
“I don’t even know how, but I was on the phone one day with (Jets director of contracts) Mike Tannenbaum and somehow it came up that he was writing both of us every day,” Banner recalled. “And we started wondering, ‘Is he really writing 32 letters every day?’
“So we had a funny conversation about whether he was driven or crazy and we couldn’t tell from the letters.
“At one point, Mike called me up and he said, ‘You’re not going to believe it, but I’ve decided I’m going to meet this guy. I’ve just got to meet a guy who actually is writing a letter every single day. He wants this job so bad. I’ve just got to meet him. And I joked, ‘Well do it in a public place, you don’t know what you’re dealing with here.’” […]
Roseman is one of the most important figures in the Eagles’ 90-year history. And it’s nuts to think how much of a fluke it is that he even came here at all. […]

Master of the Offseason: How Roseman’s Moves Led the Eagles Back to the Super Bowl
Greg Rosenstein of NBC News reports that since 2015, Howie Roseman has led the Eagles to three Super Bowl appearances, including a win in 2017, by making key moves like drafting Jalen Hurts, trading for Darius Slay, and signing A.J. Brown. His smart acquisitions, including Saquon Barkley in 2024, have created one of the NFL’s most talented rosters, with standout players at key positions. Roseman’s decisions have propelled the Eagles to another Super Bowl win and solidified his legacy as one of the league’s top general managers.
Sometimes a promotion isn’t really a promotion. At least not in the case of Howie Roseman, who oversaw the Philadelphia Eagles’ free agency and draft strategy from 2010 to 2014, only to have those duties stripped and given to then-head coach Chip Kelly.
Kelly proceeded to run the team while Roseman managed salary and off-the-field staff. But when Kelly was fired five days before the final game of the 2015 regular season, the franchise gave Roseman another crack at being general manager.
He hasn’t looked back.
“As it turned out, it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me,” Roseman said on NBC’s “ProFootballTalk” in 2018. “Did I ever think I would be back in a significant position in Philadelphia? No. I don’t think that I did. But I was just determined that I was going to try to do the right thing every day and get better and learn more.”
Since having been reinstated in that role, Roseman has led the Eagles to three Super Bowl appearances […]
The Eagles got here largely thanks to smart offseason moves by Roseman. Here were the decisions that led to arguably the most talented roster in the NFL today.
