What Has Your Advisor Done for You Lately?

April 13, 2022 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

By Kaspars Grinvalds @ Shutterstock.com

Does your advisor look at you like a source of revenue or as a valued customer who needs to be treated with the white-glove service you deserve? It’s worth asking, and I’ll get back to that in a minute, but first: What should you do if you’re thinking about retirement or just starting out in the workforce?

If you’re looking to be a member of my Survive & Thrive club, click here.

America’s cities, especially its big blue cities, are a disaster, and that’s a travesty for the country. And I’m not just talking about New York, Chicago, and La La Land—you can add Austin, TX to my list. The one-time beacon of Texas’s economic freedom today resembles any old progressive hotbed where individuals go the way of groupthink wokeness. Is this what dreams are made of?

When Your Survival Guy was just starting out, my life involved getting up early, commuting to Boston, putting in a long shift at Fidelity Investments, going home, having dinner, and studying for a securities exam. The only glove I was wearing was a yellow one to do the dishes. My days were simple: Wash, rinse, repeat.

There was plenty to complain about, but isn’t that life? Even in the best economy, it feels like a recession when you’re low down on the totem pole. You can’t allow uncontrollable events to throw you off your game. Whether that’s retirement investing or working towards your goals, there’ll always be problems out there trying to keep you down.

What’s timeless is that you strive to be a valuable asset no matter your age. The entrepreneurial spirit can’t end when something’s started. It needs to survive and thrive throughout your lifetime. How do you keep it alive and well? When you look someone in the eye, say to yourself: “What have I done for you lately?” Keep that thought in your back pocket in times like these.

Action Line: Does your advisor have a post-it-note on his computer that reads: “What have I done for you lately?” Do you remind yourself about the importance of Y-O-U on a daily basis? Because you know YOU’RE my favorite investment. You can do this. I believe in you. Let’s stay in touch here.

He grew up in Mattapoisett, MA, an idyllic small town on the water near Cape Cod. He spends time in Newport, RI and Bartlett, NH—both as far away from Wall Street as one could mentally get. The Newport office is on a quiet, tree lined street not far from the harbor and the log cabin in Bartlett, NH, the “Live Free or Die” state, sits on the edge of the White Mountain National Forest. He enjoys spending time in Key West and Paris.
