Sometimes the Fastest Route Isn’t the Best One

Happy Monday. Your Survival Guy and Gal headed up to Boston on Friday to have dinner with the kids. It’s amazing how available they are when we’re in town for dinner, as opposed to cleaning up after dinner when they’re home. “Oh, I was about to do those,” I often hear as I put the last dish into the dishwasher.

You know what? That’s OK. As we get older and the house is quieter, you miss the noise and doing the stuff you did for years when everyone was home doing homework or off at practice.

The Alternative Route Isn’t Always Fastest

There was some stop-and-go traffic on the ride into Boston, which is basically par for the course any time of day driving into the city. On the ride home, our GPS tacked on an additional hour of drive time, which I thought could not be right. But almost immediately, cars were stacked up trying to get off the expressway looking for that “alternative” route.

Turns out, as soon as the accident causing the delay was cleared, GPS had the delay cut down to 15 minutes or so. Which makes me question whether we’re better off with the tech or not as drivers cut each other off to get to where they’re going faster. Sort of reminds me of the stock market of late.

Are We Better Off Today?

Are we better off today? It’s funny. Talking with the gentleman helping us with our bags at check-in, he commented that today was a record high in Boston. It was in the low 70s. Record or not, it reminded me of when we were kids; there were plenty of Halloweens when we only had T-shirts on. We didn’t care if it was a record high.

Then again, I love having GPS walking the streets in Paris, and I pay extra attention to my battery life, knowing I’ll need my phone to hail an Uber after dinner.

Action Line: I’m not sure it’s always healthy to know what’s going on every minute of the day and living in reactionary mode. Remember, it can be helpful to keep things simple when you can. Sometimes getting to where you need to go faster isn’t the best route after all. You got this. Read more about my favorite arrondissements in Paris, and how the neighborhood you’re in can make all the difference to your trip.
